Information for Students

Try a Faculty Perspective Seminar!

Would you like to explore the subject matter of a large-enrollment course in more depth with a small group of other interested students in the class?

Rationale for the Faculty Perspective Seminar Program

This program offers a small class experience to students in large-enrollment courses, and allows faculty and motivated students to explore particular aspects of the course in depth. For example, an FP Seminar within a Jazz history course focuses on Miles Davis. The program was initiated with a grant from the Williams Fund, and has now become a regular feature of the UO curriculum.

How a Faculty Perspective Seminar Works

Faculty Perspective seminars are offered for 1 credit (Pass/No Pass), and are optional for students enrolled in some large (>50 students) classes. The seminars explore themes, topics, and ideas from the large-class lectures in greater depth and in a smaller setting, with the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the course professor. The seminars are limited to 10-20 students and emphasize classroom discussion, as well as writing with feed-back, during weekly 50-minute meetings.

Who is Eligible to Enroll in a Faculty Perspective Seminar?

The seminars are available to all students enrolled, regardless of level, in the large course. Initial enrollment is during the standard registration period that preceeds each term. Courses that have a Faculty Perspective Seminar attached to them are indicated with an "O" note on the course schedule. If spaces remain, the professor may open the seminar to interested students at the first meeting of the large course.
